Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (abbreviated hCG or HCG) is a natural hormone secreted by the human placenta and purified by the urine of pregnant women.  hCG is  a human hormone made by chorionic cells in the fetal part of the placenta which are directed at the gonads.  Thus, the name “gonadotrophin.”  Gonadotrophin, a hormone that stimulates the growth and activity of the gonads, especially the pituitary hormones that stimulate the function of the ovaries and testes.  

How does hCG work? 

hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) is a naturally occurring hormone that protects the health and nutrition of the mother and the baby.  The hormone affects the hypothalamus, the brain gland governing the thyroid, adrenals, fat storage, and metabolism.  During pregnancy, nature uses hCG to release fat the mother doesn’t need, ensuring that only proper nutrients reach the fetus.  

However, when hCG is given to a person who is not pregnant, and used along with a very low calorie intake, hCG triggers the hypothalamus to release stored (reserve) fat into the bloodstream to be utilized as energy.  Basically, the body burns its own stored fat as fuel.  The excess fat is excreted via the kidneys and the bowel.  The result is rapid weight loss from the abdomen, thighs, hips, back of the upper arms, and the back which is  the fat most dangerous to your health.  Muscle and bone are unaffected by hCG.

On hCG, your body begins to live off its stored fat.  This fat provides you energy just as food does.  This is why you are not hunger while consuming only 500 calories on the protocol.  Many people know that a single pound of fat is the equivalent of 3,500 calories.  Jogging one mile burns about 100 calories.  So, if you are 50 pounds overweight, you would need to jog from Texas to California (1,800 miles) to burn 50 pounds of fat.  However, if weight were lost that easily, then you would have people walking from coast to coast routinely.  But, if you are like millions of people, you work out regularly where you burn calories, yet you can not seem to lose weight. The reason being?  You are burning the wrong calories.

There are three kinds of fat in the human body:

Structural fat: this fills the gap between our organs (think of it as “packing material”)

Normal fat [reserves]:  the body draws on this fat when you don’t eat enough calories to meet the body’s demands.  

Abnormal fat:  these abnormal and excessive accumulations are fixed deposits of fats throughout the body and result in obesity.  The body is unable to draw on this fat in emergencies. When you exercise and diet through restricting 

HCG weight loss - the fundamental approach

Dr. Simeon’s protocol is very simple in nature.  The HCG basic diet consists of taking 7-10 drops under the tongue 3 times per day and eating a total of exactly 500 calories a day.  You can expect to lose an average of 1-2 pounds per day.

Many are initially concerned about consuming such small amounts of food and losing that much weight so quickly.  This is completely safe as you are actually burning fat stores.  While taking the HCG drops under your tongue, the HCG breaks up and mobilizes the fat pockets of your body and burns that fat for energy.  Because you maintain a low calorie diet and have zero fat intake, you keep your body at minimum intake and this forces your body to burn the fat for energy.  This is why you have no hunger on the protocol. This fat burning process combined with daily water intake of 1/2 to 1 gallon of water creates the energy levels you need during the process.  Many people continue their usual exercise routine while completing the protocol.  

To begin, you must gorge yourself for the first two days along with taking the drops.  Again, you must eat as much fatty food, ice cream, fried chicken, pizza, breads, cheese cake, and lots of butter.  If this step is omitted, the protocol will not be effective (you will have a difficult time on the protocol due the resulting hunger).  After the two day period, known as “loading days,” you begin the 500 calorie intake on what is day 3. 

A sample menu (from day 3 onward)

Breakfast:  Take the drops in the morning (at 7 a.m. if possible).  Always wait minimally 15 minutes before eating or drinking after taking drops.  No food for breakfast, only coffee, water, and tea.

Lunch:  100 grams of lean, organic chicken, fish, beef (there are specific types)
one vegetable (tomato, onion, cabbage, asparagus, spinach (you cannot mix vegetables)
one grissini breadstick  or a piece of Melba toast bread
one piece of the following organic fruit (a small apple, orange, or 1/2 grapefruit).

Dinner:  The same a lunch (but you must vary your choice of protein, vegetable, and fruit)

*Note:  You can also save either your fruit or breadstick for in between snacks, this will allow you to actual get in four (4) meals each day. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  If I don’t have a regular menstrual cycle will HCG affect this? 

A:  Some women will experience changes while on their cycle during the protocol.

Q: What deodorant can I use?

A: You can use Crystal deodorant.  Naturally Fresh comes in a roll on, which is a good option.  This specific brand is carried at Publix; however, you can find them at most health food stores.

Q: Can I complete the protocol while nursing?

A:  No, you produce prolactin, which interferes with HCG.

Q:  What makeup may I wear during the protocol?

A:  Nothing with oils or fats. No lotion or creams.  Only mineral oil is allowed or oil free lotions.

Q:  Is lipstick allowed? 

A: Yes, lipstick is permitted.

Q: Can I use lip balm, Chap Stick, or Carmex?

A:  Carmex is fine because it is wax and does not penetrate the skin.  Chap Stick is not allowed because it penetrates the skin. 

Q:  Shampoos, conditioners, and styling products?

A:  Yes, if they are rinsed out immediately.

Q:  Can I color my hair while completing the protocol? 

A:  No. 

Q:  Can I complete the protocol if I live out of state or the country?

A:  Absolutely, yes.  We have clients who we have successfully worked with doing the protocol.   

Q:  If I want to lose 15 or fewer pounds, can I use the protocol?

A:  We have seen many people who are successful in both losing a small amount of weight (even 10 or fewer) use the protocol.  For many people, ten pounds is huge in terms of how they feel and look.  HCG will only cause you to lose abnormal fat stores not normal or structural fat.  

Dietary Questions 

Q:  Can I complete the protocol if I am a vegetarian or vegan?

A:  Yes 

Q:  Why is tap water prohibited? 

A:  Tap water contains chlorine, which affects the thyroid.

Q:  What should I gorge on for two days at the beginning?

A:  High fat foods: dairy products, nuts, oils, avocados. 

Q:  Are frozen vegetables fine? 

A:  Organic and fresh is always better, but frozen will work also.

More Basic Questions

Q:  Can I complete the HCG protocol if I am lactose intolerant?

A:  Yes

Q:  How much salt is recommended?

A:  There is no restriction on the use of salt.  However, an increase in salt can be one of the most common causes of inconsistencies in weight due to water retention.  I always suggest Celtic sea salt. 

Q:  Why do I “gorge” for the first 2 days of the protocol?

A:  This is a critical original component of Dr. Simeon’s Weight Loss Cure protocol.  If you are one of millions who have been a “chronic dieter”, then Dr. Simeon suggests you consider loading for a full week.  Yes, a full week.

Q:  Won’t I starve if I only consume 500 calories a day?

A:  No.  HCG releases fat reserves, your body begins to “consume” the fat, which acts as a source of energy in place of food.  In effect, you can burn up to 1 pound a day (3,500 calories).  This is why you don’t experience hunger while using the hormone.

Q:  Will I lose exactly one pound each day while doing the protocol?

A:  No. Most on the 23 day protocol, tend to lose between 20-25 pounds.  But, the weight loss does not occur evenly over the 23 day period.  Some may experience a few days where little or no weight loss occurs.  A resumption of weight loss often occurs after the lull.

Q:  I’ve had a hysterectomy, can I do the protocol? 

A:  Yes.

Q: Why does HCG interfere with Gout?

A: HCG increases uric acid levels, which may cause a severe attack.

Q:  I have pcos (polycystic ovary syndrome) - can i use HCG?

A:  No.  This can result in blood clots and complications while on the HCG.

Q:  Can I continue taking my thyroid medication while on the protocol?

A:  The hypothalamus gland, affected by hCG, also controls the thyroid.  Taking additional thyroid medication could cause hyperthyroidism.

Phase 1-4 HCG highlights 

The program essentials are that HCG is an easy-to-maintain, healthy approach to weight loss.  We suggest mild to moderate exercise (this is optional), and daily self-administration of HCG drops under the tongue.  The two program lengths range from 7 to 9 week cycles beginning with the four (4) following cycles.  Cycles 2 and 3 can be repeated if you need to lose more than 40 pounds.   

PHASE 1:  Consultation and Prep

To participate in HCG weight loss at the Brookside Wellness Center, we schedule an initial pre-diet evaluation with our HCG experts and coach, Laura Brooks and Desiree Smith.  This can be conducted at the center or via phone. 

PHASE 2:  Weight Loss

Following your evaluation and orientation, you’ll eat a restricted diet for 4-6 weeks and will self-administer HCG daily by administering HCG drops under your tongue.  The diet which is based on restricted sugars, starches, and calories is easy to maintain but can be socially limiting. 

Days 1 and 2 (Gorge yourself and begin HCG drops)

Take 7-10 drops of HCG 3 times daily under your tongue (hold for 30 seconds).  Take the drops 15 to 30 minutes before or after consuming foods or liquids. Begin your first drops  at 7 a.m. and your last drops before or after dinner or by 6 p.m. daily.  During days 1 and 2 of the protocol, eat anything and everything you want... especially foods high in fat.  This is crucial to build up the fat you will be burning off.  If you do not binge during these two (2) days, the diet will be much more difficult.  It will also help you to not feel hungry during your first few days you have reduced your calories to 500 calories per day, which begins at day 3.

You can remain on Phase 2 up to 40 days.  However, we recommend that you do not exceed 23 days the first time around, if you have 15 or fewer pounds to lose (this is based on Dr. Simeons‘ original protocol).  You will only lose the abnormal fat.  The HCG process will not allow you to lose weight that you do not have.  Enjoy yourself and know that this will help you lose more... counterintuitive, but this works.  

PHASE 2:  Days 3-40 (maximum):  Begin STRICT 500 CALORIE DIET along with continuing the HCG drops.  Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you can do Phase 1 for as little as 3 weeks but need to limit it to under 40 days.  If you would like to lose more weight after the 40 days, complete Phase 2 to help reset your hypothalamus and give your body a rest from dieting and then start over with phase 1 again.  Drink at least 64 oz. of liquid daily (water, coffee, or tea).  Take the HCG 15-30 minutes before or after drinking or eating.  ONLY 8 ITEMS MAY BE EATEN EACH DAY AND YOU MUST STAY UNDER 500 CALORIES. 

PHASE 3:  Transition Phase.

Phase three (3) is the transition portion of the protocol.  In some ways, it is the most important phase of the entire protocol.  The goal here is to maintain your lower weight reached in phase 2.  For 21 days after the “weight loss phase”, phase 2, you continue a healthy diet, supplemented with essential fatty acids, while discontinuing the HCG drops. You also continue to restrict sugar and starches, while consuming 1,500 calories during this 21 day period.  It is important to note that weight loss is discouraged during this transition phase.  If you should have additional pounds to lose, you can repeat phases 2 and 3 after consultation until you reach your goal. 

The primary goal for this phase is to create a new weight set point that your body automatically maintains, close to your last HCG date weight.  The 3 weeks of strict Phase 2 must be done because the ultimate purpose of Phase 2 is to RESET and lock-in your new weight set-point.  If you fail to follow the protocol during these weeks, when you begin adding back other foods in Phase 3 YOU WILL BE PRONE to regain weight up to your former-set point (the weight you were before you began using the HCG protocol or the level you set on the previous round). 

Your set point is established by the hypothalamus, which is the area of the brain that controls hunger and body weight and which is “taking orders,” so to speak, from the HCG.  At the point you notice that you can eat what you want and are able to maintain a certain weight, that’s your new set point.  Here are the steps: 

Stop taking the HCG drops and remain on the 500 calorie restricted diet for 72 hours or 3 days.  Thereafter, you start on a 1,500 calorie diet. 

Weigh yourself in the morning without clothes and with an empty bladder.  This is your last HCG date weight.

Stick to a minimum 1,500 calorie intake, eating what you want, when you want it, except NO SUGARS and NO STARCHES, including sweeteners like honey, agave, aspartame, or Splenda. 

Weigh yourself every morning to make sure you stay within 2 pounds of your last HCG date weight.  If you are 2 pounds over, perform a Mini-Steak day.  This means skipping breakfast and lunch but taking in plenty of water, and tea or coffee; in the evening, eat a huge steak with only an apple or raw tomato.  

PHASE 4:  Lifestyle Maintenance.
